Discover Alegrias Seafood

Walking into Alegrias Seafood feels like stepping into a neighborhood spot that knows exactly what it’s doing and doesn’t feel the need to show off. I’ve eaten here more times than I can count, usually after a long workday, and the experience has stayed consistently solid. Located at 1024 N Ashland Ave, Chicago, IL 60622, United States, the diner has built a reputation among locals for serving seafood that tastes fresh, comforting, and surprisingly generous for the price.

The menu leans heavily into classic seafood preparations, but what stands out is how carefully everything is handled. You can tell the kitchen respects the ingredients. According to data from the National Fisheries Institute, freshness and proper storage are the two biggest factors that affect seafood flavor and safety, and this place clearly takes both seriously. I once chatted briefly with a staff member who mentioned that deliveries come in several times a week, which lines up with the texture and taste you get on the plate. The shrimp snap when you bite them, and the fish flakes cleanly without falling apart.

One dish I keep coming back to is their fried fish platter. It’s not complicated, but that’s the point. The batter is light, not greasy, and the seasoning hits that balance where it enhances the fish instead of masking it. A friend of mine who works in food service pointed out that consistent fry temperature is one of the hardest things to manage in a busy kitchen, yet here it’s done right almost every time. That kind of execution usually comes from experience, not shortcuts.

Beyond fried options, the menu also includes grilled and sautéed seafood choices for anyone looking for something lighter. Nutrition research published by the American Heart Association highlights seafood as a strong source of lean protein and omega-3 fatty acids, and it’s nice to see those options represented without sacrificing flavor. Their grilled salmon, for example, comes out moist and well-seasoned, not dried out like you’ll find at a lot of diners trying to do too much.

The location itself adds to the charm. Ashland Avenue is busy, but inside the restaurant it feels relaxed and unpretentious. I’ve noticed families, couples, and solo diners all sharing the same space without it feeling cramped. Reviews from regulars often mention how welcoming the staff is, and that tracks with my own experience. Orders come out quickly, questions about the menu are answered patiently, and there’s no pressure to rush through your meal.

What also builds trust is transparency. Portions are exactly what you expect, prices are clearly listed, and there’s no surprise add-ons. In an era where restaurant costs can fluctuate wildly, that kind of consistency matters. While I can’t speak to every sourcing detail, the overall quality suggests solid supplier relationships, something industry experts like seafood sustainability groups often emphasize as key to long-term success.

Of course, no place is perfect. During peak hours, especially on weekends, the wait can stretch longer than expected, and parking around the location can be tricky. Still, those are small trade-offs for food that delivers reliably. If you’re browsing reviews or looking for a seafood spot that feels genuine rather than trendy, this diner earns its reputation through steady performance, familiar flavors, and a clear understanding of what diners actually want.

  • The first time we came here we had an amazing experience from the service to the food. 2nd time was a HUGE let down. We made a reservation since we had a party of 8 and wanted to make sure we would have plenty of space at dinner time. Well there was one server and not very busy (like 3 tables of customers) (including us) and she was not at all attentive we had to ask for everything from water to plates silverware even the seafood shell crackers and waste basket for our massive seafood platter. To top it off she had added gratuity to our bill without letting us know (18% btw) which i would not have even given her $5 for the poor service she gave us. Then she added we can leave a tip if we'd like but looking at the total and the amount of food we got it was off so we asked of tip was already included which she said yes. So trying to get double tip sneakily I DONT THINK SO. not sure if 3rd time we will chance this even though the food was delicious.

  • The best fish I’ve had in Chicago Great service and ambience. Coconut shrimp could be better.. not so authentic but fish was amazing! Would definitely recommend and go back to try other dishes as well!

  • Algerias is such a vibrant seafood spot! We started with a refreshing complimentary ceviche before diving into two massive platters - the Charola Mixta with shrimp, crab, and mussels, and a shrimp & octopus combo. The shrimps leaned on the smaller side, but the sauce was so rich and flavorful, and the crab was surprisingly great too. The garlicky shrimp and octopus platter was an instant standout with bold and deeply satisfying flavors. Overall, we loved the warm hospitality and generous portions of the place with comforting flavors.

  • Love this place! I’ve been coming several times a year for about 10 years. The sauce kinda changed over the years as far as flavor but when asked to make it extra spicy it reminds me of back in the day. Delicious!

  • The menu is full of affordable, shareable, flavorful platters— it’s a fun spot to go with a group for any occasion! My group of 6 shared the raw oysters, octopus ceviche, and seafood platter. Besides the raw oysters which were flavorless, the other 2 dishes were great. The ceviche was fresh and flavorful and the seafood platter was DENSE with both flavor and volume. Super good value and the service was excellent too. Also BYOB!

  • Always honest opinions. Was a bit disappointed. Love seafood but this was like an explosion on a plate. You can’t tell the difference in anything. The shrimp, lobster and crab all tastes exactly the same because of the sauce they use. Nothing had prices on the menu. The muscles I ordered were really dry. Like they cooked and sat in a window drying up. Overall gave it 4 stars because I love seafood but probably won’t be back. Paid $150 for my plate and the shrimp weren’t even clean. Good but not worth the cost based on the quality of the seafood.

  • Alegria’s is amazing. I appreciate the staffs and managers kindness to me even though I have autism and their food is amazing and really good. Owner Norman very nice. The restaurant is in good condition. Amazing seafood. Must come back. 10/10.

  • BYOB. One of the best micheladas I've had in a while. The free crab tostada that is served when you sit down is a nice touch. I got the small ceviche and it was a lot of food. The aguachile was perfect.
